Leadership Martin J. Driscoll Mr. Driscoll became CEO of Javelin in March 2008 and brings more than twenty-five years of executive experience in pharmaceutical Marketing & Sales, Business Development and Operations to the company. Mr. Driscoll joined Javelin from Pear Tree Pharmaceuticals, a private pharmaceutical company focused on developing prescription products for women, prior to Pear Tree, Mr. Driscoll was a principal of MJD Consulting LLC, a commercial and management consulting firm for the pharmaceutical industry. Until August of 2005, Mr. Driscoll was Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Reliant Pharmaceuticals, a privately-held company that markets a portfolio of branded pharmaceutical products, where he was a member of the Management Committee and an Executive Officer of the Company. Prior to joining Reliant, Mr. Driscoll was Vice President of Commercial Operations and Business Development at ViroPharma Inc. Mr. Driscoll was also the ViroPharma Chair for the ViroPharma/Aventis Joint Steering Committee for the companies' antiviral product collaboration. From 1983 to 2000, Mr. Driscoll held positions of increasing responsibility at the Schering-Plough Corporation, including Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Schering's Primary Care, Diabetes, Acute Coronary Syndromes, and Key Pharmaceuticals Units. His experience includes management of franchises that encompass oncologic, cardiovascular, anti-infective, metabolic, CNS, pulmonary and dermatologic products. His extensive experience includes the negotiation, implementation and management of collaborations with other life sciences companies from both the licensor and licensee perspective. Mr. Driscoll is a graduate of the University of Texas in Austin, TX. Daniel B. Carr, MD Daniel B. Carr, M.D was appointed President in June 2008 and has been Chief Medical Officer of Javelin since 2004. He is also the Saltonstall Professor of Pain Research in the Departments of Anesthesia and Medicine at Tufts Medical Center and also a founding director of the MS Program in Pain Research, Education & Policy of Tufts University School of Medicine. He is known internationally for his contributions to pain research, evidence-based pain medicine, and to the social and political aspects of pain relief. He co-chaired and drafted major portions of the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research Clinical Practice Guidelines on Acute and Cancer Pain Management, and has edited and authored over 300 articles and books spanning clinical practice, literature syntheses, and narrative medicine; systematic reviews in peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Carr is also the recipient of many awards and honors from leading professional organizations and healthcare institutions worldwide. Dr. Carr received an MD with Honors (Alpha Omega Alpha) as well as MS and BS (Honors) degrees in Physics from Columbia University. Fred H. Mermelstein, PhD Dr. Mermelstein is the founder of Pain Management, Inc., now Javelin Pharmaceuticals and has served on the Board of Directors since its inception. Dr. Mermelstein has worked in various roles at the company including CEO and President. Formerly, Dr. Mermelstein served as Director of Venture Capital for Paramount Capital Investments, LLC., where he was also a General Partner of the of Orion Biomedical GP, LLC and has served on the New York Biotechnology Association’s Advisory Committee. He also serves as Chairman of Pear Tree Pharmaceuticals and Director of Adherex Technologies, Inc.; and previously Cardiome Pharma and the Jordan Heart Foundation. From February 1997 until January 2000, Dr. Mermelstein was the founder and has served as a Director and Chief Science Officer of PolaRx BioPharmaceuticals, an oncology-based biopharmaceutical company which developed Trisenox™. Dr. Mermelstein holds a dual PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology from Rutgers University and University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He completed his post-doctoral training supported by two grant awards; a National Institutes of Health fellowship and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute fellowship in the Department of Biochemistry at UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Dr. Mermelstein has authored numerous publications and several patents.
Stephen J. Tulipano, CPA, MBA Stephen J. Tulipano joined Javelin in May 2006 as its Chief Financial Officer. In this capacity, he oversees all of the Company's finance functions, including treasury, tax, accounting, financial planning, reporting, controls and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance. Previously, he was Director of Corporate Accounting at Biogen Idec. During his tenure at Biogen Idec, which spanned over seven years, he was responsible for accounting, external reporting, establishment of new accounting and internal control initiatives worldwide and developing innovative business approaches to partnered programs and business development opportunities. Prior to joining Biogen, he served as External Reporting Manager for Digital Equipment Corporation. Mr. Tulipano is a Certified Public Accountant, a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants and holds a M.B.A. from Suffolk University. He is also a veteran of the United States Navy and the United States Army National Guard. David B. Bernstein, Esq. Mr. Bernstein joined Javelin in April 2006 and serves as the company’s General Counsel and Chief Intellectual Property Counsel. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Bernstein held the same position at U.S. Genomics. Formerly, Mr. Bernstein co-founded the Intellectual Property section at the law firm Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky & Popeo, and served as section chairperson. Mr. Bernstein has also held the position of Intellectual Property Counsel for 3M Company, and was a partner at Wolf, Greenfield & Sacks, a law firm specializing in intellectual property. He has extensive experience in the biopharmaceutical sector, including work in biotechnology, biomaterials, and medical devices. Furthermore, his experience includes semiconductor and microfabrication technologies. He has a background in obtaining and enforcing patents, trademarks and copyrights and intellectual property licensing. Mr. Bernstein holds a B.S. in engineering from Yale University and a J.D. from Franklin Pierce Law Center. Michael Moshman, MBA, B.Sc. Mr. Moshman was promoted to Vice President in September 2005, previously he served as Director of Clinical and Commercial Manufacturing since March 2002. He has over 30 years of experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing and development. He previously served as a Director of Pharmaceutical Development Services at Patheon, Inc. and Vice President of Operations at Novocol Pharmaceutical, Inc. He also served as Director of Manufacturing at Survival Technology, Inc. (now Meridian Medical Technology). He spent the first 20 years of his career in Manufacturing Management, Quality Control and Quality Assurance at Bristol Myers Squibb and Berlex Laboratories. Mr. Moshman has extensive experience in business development, regulatory compliance, validation and engineering. He holds an MBA from Rutgers University and a BSc in Chemistry from City College of New York. Mark Matthews Responsible for commercializing Javelins portfolio of pain products globally, Mark has a wealth of experience in pharmaceutical and biotechnology marketing and sales, both in the US and Europe. Mark started his career as a sales representative in the UK with Ciba-Geigy, followed by experience in Brand Marketing. Mark then moved to the US where he was responsible for marketing a number of brands, including Voltaren (diclofenac sodium) for OA/RA and Cataflam, for acute pain.Following 7 years Brand Marketing in the US Mark moved into sales management, including General Manager, Novartis North East Region, following the merger of Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz. During this assignment, Mark was responsible for a large regional sales organization, as well as regional marketing, managed care and hospital sales. Prior to joining Javelin Pharmaceuticals in May 2006, Mark held several senior positions in the Biotechnology Industry, including VP of Marketing Serono (Reproductive Health Business Unit) and VP of Marketing Biogen Idec (Neurology Business Unit). Fredrick E. Pierce, II Mr. Pierce has been the Company's Vice President of Investor Relations since July 2006. Prior to that he was Interim CEO of GlycoGenesys, Inc. from February 2006 until June 2006. Prior to his role as interim CEO, he was GlycoGenesys' Vice President of Business Development since 2002 and the company's Vice President of Finance and Investor Relations from June 1998. Prior to joining GlycoGenesys Mr. Pierce had 12 years experience working in Wall Street firms representing and/or advising major biotechnology and medical device companies. From 1994 to 1997, Mr. Pierce was at Lehman Brothers, where he was the New England private client services liaison to healthcare investment banking. Prior thereto, Mr. Pierce had over seven years experience in portfolio management and brokerage and institutional equity sales at Kidder Peabody and Merrill Lynch. John C. Taylor Mr. Taylor became Javelin's Vice President, Business Development in April 2008 bringing nearly fifteen years of industry experience in business development, licensing, marketing and sales to the Company. Mr. Taylor is globally responsible for the Company's business development and alliance management functions, principally focused on managing the partnering process for Javelin's late stage pain products. Prior to joining Javelin, Mr. Taylor was Director, Business Development for Eurand, Inc. a GI specialty pharmaceutical and drug delivery company. Mr. Taylor successfully led the team responsible for Eurand's licensing transactions within North America. Before Eurand, Mr. Taylor led the fundraising and commercialization activities for Sarnoff Corporation's Healthcare and Life Sciences Unit as the Director, Business Development. Prior to Sarnoff, Mr. Taylor held positions in licensing, marketing, and sales with Amersham Pharmacia Biotech and BioWhittaker. Mr. Taylor received his Bachelors degree in Biological Sciences from Clemson University and his Masters degree in Technology Management from the Wharton School of Business/ University of Pennsylvania.
